The Director-General, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, has advised schools in the state to make ‘reading corners’ available for their pupils.

Soyombo also urged parents and teachers to encourage children to have good reading habit.

She said that such interventions would encourage pupils to inculcate good reading habits.

The DG made the appeal at an event to mark Lagos State Literacy Day.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation declared every September 8 as the World Literacy Day. However, Lagos State celebrated it last Monday to enable pupils and teachers to participate in the event.

Soyombo said, “Good reading habit promotes literacy and empowers children to become better future leaders. If a child develops good reading skill, it will be a platform for them to express themselves better.

She added, “Schools should have reading corners and at least half an hour of quality reading time. In this age of globalisation, it is not too much for schools to make newspapers available in their school so that children can read them and be aware of happenings in the world.”

The educationist also urged parents to encourage their children to read and devote time to study with them.

Soyombo, who noted that Information Technology could have negative influence on children, urged parents to expose them to education-related apps.
